China and ASEAN Promote Regional Economic
Recovery and Growth
2020 has seen the 10th anniversary of the all-round establishment of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area and the China-ASEAN Digital Economic Cooperation Year. In the face of the unexpected impact triggered by COVID-19, China and ASEAN have jointly combated the pandemic, strengthened economic and trade cooperation, developed digital economy, actively promoted regional economic recovery, and injected confidence and impetus into the recovery of the global economy.
Economic and trade cooperation goes deep and solid. In the first eight months of this year, the trade value between China and ASEAN reached 2.93 trillion RMB, up by 7%, accounting for 14.6% of China’s total, which made ASEAN China’s largest trading partner. Recently, a series of meetings of ASEAN economic ministers and East Asia Summit have been held via video links. All parties have had an in-depth exchange of views and reached broad consensus on deepening the Belt and Road international cooperation, maintaining the multilateral trading system and other important regional and international economic and trade issues.
Digital economy becomes the highlight. The Joint Statement of Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on COVID-19 and ASEAN-China Economic Ministers’ Joint Statement on Combating COVID-19 and Enhancing ACFTA Cooperation issued this year propose to promote the development of digital economy. China’s digital technology enterprises have made outstanding contributions to the anti-pandemic cooperation of both sides. Huawei provides remote video conference systems and data platforms in Cambodia and other countries to help them develop information sharing and telecommuting. Alibaba Cloud, a cloud computing platform owned by Alibaba, will launch its third local data center in Indonesia, providing richer data and network, machine learning, data analysis and other services.
