Why the Managing Director of the World Economic Forum Praised Yunnan for its Green Development

Source: Department of International Cooperation / Updated: 2021-07-23

—See how Yunnan create "green energy", "green food" and "healthy living destination" from the joint research of National Development and Reform Commission and World Economic Forum.

Recently, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the World Economic Forum (WEF) jointly organized a field visit to Yunnan for 18 representatives of 12 multinational enterprises under the theme of "Green Development". "I was impressed by Yunnan's achievements in developing green economy and environmental protection, and these experiences are worth promoting globally." David Aikman, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum and the chief representative of Greater China of the World Economic Forum, said after the field study.

What did Aikman see on his trip to Yunnan that made him praise the green development here? In fact, before the joint research team visited Yunnan, they "received" three cards from the region - "green energy", "green food" and "healthy living destination" card. These three cards are also Yunnan's development strategy based on the local situation, aiming to make green a distinctive color for industrial transformation and upgrading, and high-quality economic development.

Recreating green energy with green energy

Yunnan Province has an average of 2,400 hours of sunshine throughout the year, and Chuxiong Prefecture is one of the richest areas of Yunnan solar energy resources. The Government of Chuxiong Prefecture has introduced Longi Green Energy, JinkoSolar, Jiangxi Yuze and other photovoltaic silicon enterprises to develop around the decision of the provincial party committee and the provincial government to play the "green energy card".

Silicon, known as the "king of semiconductors", is the main raw material for solar cells. According to the data, at present, Chuxiong state has built, under construction, proposed monocrystalline silicon wafer production capacity of 105GW, accounting for 1/4 of the national existing capacity, accounting for half of the province's existing capacity. 2020, the state silicon industry has achieved an output value of 12.5 billion yuan. The production capacity of monocrystalline silicon wafers ranked as the first in the province.

The joint group saw monocrystalline silicon rods, monocrystalline slices, crystalline silicon photovoltaic panels and other products during their field visits to enterprises such as Yuzhe Semiconductor and JinkoSolar. "Compared to polysilicon, monocrystalline silicon has higher conversion efficiency and its market share is climbing rapidly." According to the person in charge of JinkoSolar, the company is currently laying out the whole industry chain of "materials, slices, pools and pieces", and the breakthrough in technology is the only way to calculate the long-term benefits.

At the exchange meeting between government and enterprises, the person in charge of Longi proposed "Solar for Solar": when the whole industry chain of PV manufacturing is driven by clean energy, it can realize "zero carbon" production. This development model of "recreating green energy with green energy" proposed by Longi impressed Aikman.

According to the industrial layout of Chuxiong Prefecture, Chuxiong is seizing the opportunity of achieving carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060, and in accordance with the decision and deployment of Yunnan Province to promote the development of integrated hydropower and silicon processing industry, to improve the strength of crystalline silicon material manufacturing and make up the weakness of auxiliary material manufacturing, to form a whole silicon photovoltaic industry chain of "industrial silicon - photovoltaic grade polysilicon - monocrystalline silicon - silicon wafer - cell wafer - module", and to make silicon industry into a 100 billion industry.

In fact, the practice of Chuxiong Prefecture is just a glimpse of Yunnan's efforts to build world-class "green energy". By the end of 2020, the province's installed power exceeds the 100 million kilowatt mark, of which 85% is clean energy, mainly hydropower, 46 percentage points higher than the national average.

Yunnan is also the first province in China to send electricity from the west to the east, with a cumulative total of more than 10,000 billion kilowatt-hours, equivalent to reducing the consumption of 290 million tons of standard coal for the southern region, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 770 million tons and sulfur dioxide by 5.5 million tons, making a huge contribution to the economic development of the eastern region and the national battle against pollution.

Creating green food products through the whole industry chain

The pollen of walnut has good immunity enhancing effect. The green bark of walnut is rich in vitamin B and vitamin C. The walnut septum can be used as medicine, and the walnut membrane coat has antioxidant function ...... In Moore Farm Walnut Museum, there are not only dried fruits, walnut milk, walnut oil and other products, but also walnut pollen, hair dye made from walnut. The museum not only has products such as dried fruits, walnut milk and walnut oil, but also walnut flower powder, hair dye developed from the ingredients extracted from the green skin of walnut, and crafts made of iron walnut shells.

In this regard, Aikman considers it "very innovative" and hopes that more companies can extend the whole industry chain of green food like Moore Farms. "In other words, we don't just focus on growing and selling apples, we also squeeze apples into juice and even make corresponding products from apple seeds to move up to the higher end of the industry chain and make the company's development more sustainable."
China has the largest number of walnuts planted in the world, and Yunnan is the largest area of walnuts planted and produced in China, and has the world's largest walnut germplasm resources. The joint team visited Moore Farms, the leading enterprise of walnut industry in Yunnan Province and the first comprehensive enterprise to carry out the "integration of three industries" in walnut industry.

In addition to the deep development and utilization of the whole walnut industry chain, there are at least three other things that impressed the research group at Moore Farm: first, the cooperation with Yunnan Provincial Department of Forestry and Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc. The seed bank of Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences has preserved the germplasm resources of more than 100 species of walnuts worldwide. Second, it has brought the walnut industry into the era of molecular biology, and completed the deciphering of walnut genes, gene transcriptome deciphering, and functional factor analysis. Third, it has promoted the modernization of the walnut industry in Yunnan, stretched the added value of walnuts, and lifted local farmers out of poverty and wealth.

It is not a unique case. Yunnan Province ranks first in the country in terms of coffee area, production and output value. Yunnan coffee beans became a topic of discussion during the visit. After nearly 70 years of development, Yunnan has become China's largest coffee grower, trading hub and exporter, and its specialty, small-grain coffee beans, are now the mainstay of the fine coffee market.

As it is reported, Yunnan has made every effort to build a world-class "green food". Since 2018, the annual average increase in the comprehensive output value of key industries such as tea, flowers, vegetables, fruits, Chinese herbs, nuts, coffee and beef cattle has reached more than 16%. The Yunnan brand agricultural products are sold to more than 150 large and medium-sized cities in China and more than 110 countries and regions.

Development of health and cultural tourism industries

Yunnan Baiyao is a long-established Chinese brand. In 1902, a 22-year-old Yi villager, Qu Huanzhang, combined folk medicine with the practice of horse gangs to develop "Baibao Dan", a medicine for bruises and internal bleeding, which is the prototype of Yunnan Baiyao. This is the story of the founding of the brand that the team saw in the exhibition hall of Yunnan Baiyao.

The exhibition guide said that after a century of development, Yunnan Baiyao is building a "medicine" based health product ecosystem. The company has steadily promoted the integration of traditional Chinese medicine into modern life, launching new health products such as toothpaste, Panax notoginseng, shampoo, facial mask and steam eye mask. Yunnan Baiyao's toothpaste is its most successful product, with a market share of 22.2% in 2020, ranking first in the industry.

The joint research also visited the intelligent production workshop of Yunnan Baiyao aerosol. "This Yunnan Baiyao aerosol is divided into two bottles, red and white, and you can see two production lines, one red and one white." The staff introduced beside the automated production line, "From boxing to sealing, then to printing the batch number to pasting the double-sided traceability code on the box, and finally to the queue testing, this set of machines is all developed by Yunnan Baiyao itself."

The joint group visited the smart production line of aerosol of Yunnan Baiyao Group.
The heritage is not confined to the origin, and the innovation is not separated from the origin.  Yunnan Baiyao's specialized production and refined management are both greatly appreciated by Aikman. "I see similarities in Yunnan Baiyao and Moore Manor, that is, to find comparative advantages and deepen the whole industrial chain."

From the development of "modern Chinese medicine, vaccines and stem cell applications" to "medical research and treatment" to "recreation and leisure", the whole industry chain of the health industry is the key to creating a "healthy living destination" in Yunnan. According to statistics, in recent years, the main business income and new investment in Yunnan's health industry have increased by more than 20% annually.

It is worth mentioning that Yunnan is promoting the integration of health industry with cultural tourism, sports, education and other industries. After the initial stage of sightseeing, Yunnan tourism is being upgraded to "Travel in Yunnan with a cellphone", a smart tour mode and "Recreation + Tourism", a deep tour mode.

People from all over the world come to Yunnan to travel, to live in Yunnan, to maintain their health, to get well, and even to settle and retire in Yunnan ...... This is a change in both green development and green lifestyle, and Yunnan is on its way.
