On March 23, China and Malawi signed a memorandum of understanding on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) cooperation. Malawi's Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo and Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Liu Hongyang attended and addressed the ceremony held in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi.
Nancy Tembo noted that this year marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Malawi and China. She thanked China for its constant support to Malawi and noted that China is a good friend and brother of Malawi. For her country, development is of utmost importance, which is consistent with the original aspiration of China's BRI. Malawi looks forward to deepening cooperation with China on poverty alleviation, agricultural products export, infrastructure construction, public health, etc. to benefit the two peoples and push bilateral relations to a new height.
Liu Hongyang said Malawi's joining the BRI will provide new impetus to the development of bilateral relations and practical cooperation. By linking the BRI with Malawi's 2063 Vision, China is willing to work with Malawi in all aspects, share the benefits of development with the Malawian people, and contribute to Malawi's building of an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant nation as early as possible.
