On January 12, Feng Biao, China's ambassador to Syria, and Fadi Khalil, head of Syria's Planning and International Cooperation Commission on behalf of the two countries, respectively, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Belt and Road Cooperation in the capital Damascus.

At the signing ceremony, Feng Biao congratulated Syria on becoming a new member of the big family of BRI. He said the MoU on BRI provides the action goal, guideline, and program for both sides on deepening concrete cooperation in the new situation, realizing the BRI and the eastward strategy proposed by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and China's participation in the economic reconstruction of Syria in the future.

Khalil noted that Syria had been one of the main countries on the ancient Silk Road particularly the cities of Aleppo and Palmyra. He pointed out that the signing of Syria's admission into the initiative reflects an ancient and long history of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. The signing of the MoU will help in boosting bilateral cooperation with China and multilateral cooperation with other countries, which hope to cooperate with Syria.
