The Cambodian national stadium, funded by the Chinese government and constructed by a Chinese enterprise, was officially inaugurated on December 18. Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wentian attended the inauguration ceremony.
Hun Sen announced the official inauguration of the national stadium, which will be the centerpiece venue for the Southeast Asian Games in 2023. He expressed his gratitude to China and said that it is a great achievement in Cambodia's sports sector and another fruit of the friendship between Cambodia and China.
Wang Wentian said that the Cambodian national stadium is the largest stadium at the highest level aided by the Chinese government so far. Cambodia will host the Southeast Asian Games for the first time in this stadium. He believes Cambodia will make it a grand occasion to show its national image, propel national development and invigorate national spirit.
Located in the outskirts of Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, the stadium resembles a Cambodian greeting, Sampeah, and features the ancient roof ridge and other architectural elements. According to the contractor, the stadium covers a total building area of over 80,000 square meters and accommodates about 60,000 spectators.
