On October 10, 2022, a ceremony was held to fire the first gas turbine of the Kyaukpyu Gas-fired Combined Cycle Power Plant in Myanmar. Invested and built by Power Construction Corporation of China, the power plant has an installed capacity of 135 MW, with more than 90 percent of the equipment made in China. With an annual transmission capacity of 1 TWh, it is considered as an example of China-Myanmar cooperation in power construction under the Belt and Road Initiative. During the construction of the project, all relevant parties have united their efforts to fight the pandemic, tackled challenges through mutual assistance, and made outstanding contributions to local economic and social development.

In recent years, China has aided Myanmar to resolve the problem of power shortage, with a number of power projects to be implemented by Chinese enterprises in Myanmar. Currently, the projects of Taiping River Class-1 Hydropower Station supplying power to Myanmar and China-Myanmar cross-border power interconnection are under progress.
