The latest statistics of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) show that in a ranking list of currencies for global payments by value in December 2021, the RMB's share as a global payments currency ascended to the fourth position.
In December 2021, the shares of the U.S. dollar, the euro and the British pound sterling as global payments currencies ranked the top three by 40.51 percent, 36.65 percent and 5.89 percent respectively. The RMB's share rose from 2.14 percent in November 2021 to 2.7 percent in December, ranking fourth while the Japanese yen's share fell to 2.58 percent and stood at the fifth ranking.
